Is Your LinkedIn Profile Picture Good Enough?

Over time, I’ve come across a wide variety of profile pictures - from ‘group’ profile pictures to blurry profile pictures and extremely distant pictures. You probably have as well. If you’re not sure what to post or even how far to crop your picture for your profile, here are a few things to consider:

  1. Use a picture that is very CLEAR - Try to avoid overly pixelated or blurry pictures. At the barest minimum think ‘passport photograph’ standard (right after the picture is taken, not when it has been put in the passport and has now become someone distorted.

  2. Make sure that the focus is your FACE - This simply means that 70 - 80% of the picture should feature your whole face and your shoulders. Full and half body length pictures do not optimize the room available to highlight your face. It’s also okay to feature your image from the top of your head to under your bust.

  3. Your profile picture is all about YOU: Group pictures such as event shots and family portraits have their place in an album. If your profile picture includes others, even though you might appear to stand out, it’s still a confusing representation of you,

  4. Stand upright - no slouching: Present yourself confidently by standing upright, with a smile (preferred). Slouching or relaxing appears nonchalant and unintentional about connecting with others.

  5. Dress appropriately: LinkedIn is a professional network, which means that you are expected to present yourself as a professional. While this doesn’t mean that you need to wear a suit, you are expected to dress in clothes that improve your employability / trustworthiness. Do not discount the importance of appropriate dressing, as it encourages respect.
